My subway impressions
What I like about it is that it's near Park Row, where all the newspapers were in New York. This was probably the subway station they used back then, it's right near where the original New York Times was and the New York World and Tribune and the Sun down the block. But that whole scene near City Hall is right out of the past, City Hall, the subway station and other scenery around the area probably are exactly the same as they were 100 years ago.
This was the subway being built at Union Square in 1901. I'm not sure if it's the same line, but I believe it is -- one of my older aunts told me about riding the subway when it first opened in 1905. She said it was free all week and you could take it anywhere it went. They lived near the LL line in Greenpoint/Williamsburg Brooklyn, which this line still services today, so I am assuming this was the line she was referring to. I think it was the only line that went through their neighborhood.
